Democrats have only 59 seats now in the Senate after losing Edward Kennedy’s seat in Massachusetts and they require 67 votes to bring about CTBT passed within and implemented for India. A sign of relief for India!
Though George Bush was not so popular President in US, it was during his term, India -US bilateral relations touched peek with Indian nuclear aspirations, for purposes other than war, were met. At the same time, we are not ignoring Obama’s ‘achievement’, a result of his efforts for Nuclear Non-proliferation that got him the Nobel Prize for Peace. But India, though emerging as regional power, is still concerned about the deteriorating state of it’s neighbor Pakistan ruled by terrorists Talibhan and Al Qaeda. In light of this situation, we are glad to say…yes, Obama cannot! ( w.r.t CTBT)
Pakistan, headed by a figure-head government elected by fragile/ weak democracy, has lost it’s war on Terror to Talibhan and Al Qaeda. They are interested in provoking Indo-Pak War, by its continued terrorist attacks on India. Even US defense Secretary, Robert Gates, is aware that LeT was responsible for Mumbai Terror attacks. And we also know that Al Qaeda is still operating in/ from Afghanistan ( despite elected government of Hamid Karzai). So look at the picture wherein the Afghan-Pak is controlled by terrorists like Tehreek-e-talibhan (in Pak), LeT in India and Pak, and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Afghan-Pak has become an epicenter of terrorists and no CTBT can be signed by India in this situation.
Adding to this, even China with its modernized military, is staking its claim on Arunachal Pradesh as its territory. US instead of supporting the non-government in Pakistan, should take India into confidence as its partner to combat terrorists! But, we do not see that happening! In view of its stability in the economy, its military/Navy/ Air force strength and its geographical location as peninsula…India cannot be forced by any power in the world. It is high time, US should realize this! What say?
