Lord Krishna says in Mahabharata during the course of song divine, The bhagawad Gita, ” The fruit of good actions, they say, is Sattwic and pure; verily, the fruits of Rajas is pain, and the fruits of Tamas is ignorance.” stanza 16, chapter 14.
I have really wondered many times and shared with you all in this blog ….how cause and effect takes place without any error, and how one can control this repetitive occurrence. Krishna, the great conversationalist, clearly indicates the results of living in various gunas – Sattwic, Rajasic and Tamasic – in the Bhagawad Gita.
Thought is the father of action – and everyone agrees to this! In Today’s world, only Money, social status, possessions, ownership of assets – take precedence over all other aspects for a good contented/ happy living. I can vouch that if one is living a quiet, contented and cheerful life of service and devotion, of love and kindness, of mercy and compassion – that person is Sattwic. I have met such people leading a life of peace and tranquility and their face reflects this Sattwic state of mind. In my earlier post, I have called happiness as a state of mind..because…really speaking..external objects, people in general or close relations – marital or family, habits that are addictive – cannot guarantee sustained happiness. Happiness has to come from within! It is difficult to lead a noble life which all spiritual books, talks, discourses ask us to do. Our actions can be noble…sometimes…. but to lead a noble life in this age of competition is not so easy if not impossible.
So this calls for disciplining our mind and controlling our thoughts – which is not easy. I have found that a detached life – detached from material possessions and relations, having no expectations from others – can give me happiness. So, lately, I have no expectations from anyone but only a sense of duty to complete my responsibilities. This approach has helped me to improve my perception of my surroundings..I am happy the way the life is since I am quite contented. There are no more agitations in my mind due to comparison with others’ lives. I cannot call this Sattwic living but it is close to that!
Rajasic living is a passionate life giving rise to insatiable desires and extreme attachment and a ‘constant’ effort to fulfill our own needs. Such an individual is always striving to acquire more ‘wealth’ – to possess, to keep, to spend, to enjoy, to save – that is usually more than he needs to live.Yes, I have got out of this trap! I am not experiencing any pain, mental or emotional, due to such a state of mind any longer. For several years, I have led a discontented life experiencing only pain and suffering. I am not interested any more to lead such a life. I can see many people everyday, mostly younger than me, trapped in this kind of situation. I have great regard of my father who graduated from Rajasic state of mind to Sattwic. The glory of his ever smiling face reminds me of his life style, especially during the last few years, before he passed away in the year 2008. His approach towards his life during the last 3 or 4 years changed drastically to become a very contented life.
‘Ignorance is bliss’ – but it leads to a life of no action, only illusions, no discrimination capacity and servility. Such a life is as good as not living. Such a living is termed as Tamasic.
