To understand the point of view of MF Hussain is difficult. His grievance that he was not treated well in India…is genuine! Politics does not meet individuals’ specific merits. It is a populist (addressing the mass) way of life and votes matter more than anything else.
MF Hussein should realize that he chose to paint pictures of Hindu Gods in a way that is not acceptable to the most of the Hindu community. His reasoning that there were already ‘naked’ statues of Goddesses in Khajuraho or elsewhere..does not allow him to repeat the same in his paintings. Qatar conferring on him its citizenship does not seek our ‘undue’ attention. It is his ‘Art’ that is recognised worldwide and it is a business decision for him to accept Qatari citizenship. Most important, what if Qatar is not democratic? All that matters to him…he is safe there! And he is a Muslim and may live not very long ( knowing his age), so he wants to live safely and continue doing his paintings. His projects are monumental and he needs funds which he can get from Qatar citizens/ government. Plus, he feels emotionally secure in Qatar and he has surrendered his Indian citizenship! If he does not create any anti-hindu feelings any more through his paintings, he should not get in to problems in visiting India!
Why not leave him there? Why to waste prime time on Television discussing his decision?? End of story! At least, the roads in Qatar are cleaner and he can continue walking barefooted comfortably.
Surely, he is 95 years old and ‘personal safety’ is important at that age.
