Rajya Sabha clears Women’s reservation Bill! Will Lok Sabha too?

Women’s reservation (33%) bill being passed in Rajya Sabha… has become a historic achievement. Of late, the news have been around women! Firstly, the women’s day was just few days back and then there was a long standing debate on women in this blog and I thought it will not ever end but it did!

All eyes are focused on UPA strength in Lok Sabha..with Samajwadi Party ( Mulayam Singh Yadav) and Rashtriya Janata Dal ( Lalu Prasad Yadav) withdrawing support to Congress on this issue. So, that leaves UPA with wafer-thin majority in Lok Sabha. Mamta Banerjee (Trinamul Congress) wants minority quota and that is also put on the table for discussion. Congress depends on its allies now more than ever it did. Probably, for the entire term, it would depend on its allies hereafter.

BJP is headless since Atal Bihari Vajpayee renounced active politics due to his failing health. Does this mean a change in the government, if the Women’s reservation bill is pursued? No! Nobody wants a mid-term election. All this is not new in Indian politics and every time an issue or controversy is there, horse-trading is in full force to establish majority on the floor of Lok Sabha. There is elections..assembly elections scheduled in Bihar and UP. And the Yadav parties will utilise this chance to polarise voters on lines of caste and religion again, by using or voicing efforts against women’s reservation bill. Most of the vote banks targeted by the Yadav parties are economically backward classes and there is no gender equality in these vote banks.

Congress is making strident advances in targeting the youth as well as Women! There is lot of progress in these two sectors and they constitute a large chunk of voters in general. Can Congress shift the ground from politics centred on caste and religion? Can it play the ‘women’s reservation’ issue to gain votes from the women voters?

But, this issue of reservation for women was pending for long time! We need more elected representatives who are women to address many issues pertaining to women..namely..population and sterilization, education among women ( as such most of Indian population are uneducated and women do not even get a chance to educate themselves? So, will it bring about a change??), health and nutrition to women, particularly girl children etc. You would be surprised to know that majority of undernourished are girl children?

Another topic I want to write about is “Ambition lacking in majority of Women”. I am surprised… that at schools, it is the girls who get top ranks but when it comes to career choice, social positions, they give in to men. Why does it happen this way? Why do the priorities change amongst women? Actually, there is lot to write and quite often! More so, I see women taking up tasks they have chosen, quite meticulously to become..wonderful mothers, supportive wives, career women, enigmatic personalities…in that order. But, even today, their lives revolve around their men. And God created Women! To support men? Are they not selfless? No wonder, I am in awe of some women!

With this post, I complete 100 posts on this blog. The blog page serves as a voice board, an ever ‘cleaned’ slate to write again and again, a stress-buster, and a wonderful companion!

    • please do not go by exceptions! I am really concerned why women center their lives on their husbands/ children. If you notice, even in a developed country, it is the men who lead while wives follow… women are altruistic in achieving their goals… it is an age old theory practiced by women at large.
