‘Raavan’ – unlike other Mani Ratnam Movies – A review

Last week, while I was in Pune, I had been to watch the latest mani ratnam movie ‘Raavan’ starring Abhishek, Aishwarya and Vikram (tamil super star… acting as police inspector whose wife ( played by Aishwarya) is kidnapped)…actually, i was not particularly eager to watch the movie after having read its review…still I just decided to watch it!

Abhishek’s histrionics are good but Aishwarya let me down with her poor display of her acting skills.
Raavan - abhishek and aishwarya

There is no ‘story’ as such but the effort is to portray a nonsensical script and the editing is very bad ( as mentioned by Big B in his twitter and I feel the same). The only resemblance to ‘Raamayan’ is that.. a ‘wife’ is kidnapped by a dacoit Beera (?) and kept in house arrest. Aishwarya looks really old (36?) in the movie and does not create any interest in the audience. Also Govinda’s portrayal as hanuman is really weird…..it is all a ‘simile’ attempted by mani ratnam in vain.

And, lastly Vikram (Dev) doubting his wife is very funny and Aishwarya going back to Abhishek ( Beera) …what is mani ratnam trying to achieve? At last…who is Raavan and Who is Ram..who is good and who is bad…not really worth watching. I like only the song..” behne de..”

It is hard to believe that the same director made ‘Roja’ and ‘Bombay’…..

  1. Hmm…I tend to agree for the most part…although I saw the Tamil version. Most of the flaws are common to both movies I guess. Overall it was a letdown by Mani Ratnam standards

  2. I heard that the Tamil version is good as it is sans Abhishek. Is that bad too?
