Why do bad things happen to good people?

“Life is an uncharted territory and it reveals its story from moment to moment”

I read this statement in the Reader’s digest magazine many years back, but it has remained as an etching on a piece of glass – that cannot be erased ever. Why do bad things happen to good people?…I am as puzzled as I was even then, because I do not have any convincing answer in reply to the question. Probably, let me explain this. We all know that we live in a state of ‘polarity consciousness’ and we judge events (or objects) as good or bad, light or shadow, day or night etc. Our feeling is limited by time and space and we are not in a position to overcome this limitation. Life is seen as a contrast between opposing forces.

But, Good or bad is a judgmental issue!

There are no valid explanations, really! We have agreed that there is a super natural force guiding everyone’s life. And that, Life is like a stage ( a cliché statement) or a movie set where scripts are acted out … for the experience that they will bring etc. But, a bad experience can prove to be good one too; a blessing in disguise.

I agree, during bad events, pain that is felt at the physical level cannot be denied in existence. But, at higher levels of consciousness, pain is experienced through disappointment, sorrow, misery – all of them as offshoots of unhappiness.

Next question: Can we decide whether to be happy or unhappy?

It is all a matter of perception and an unpleasant experience can be taken up as a challenge by some so that it can transform their lives. Attitude is the driving force in acceleration or deceleration of life’s activities taken up by an individual. And, transformation itself – the natural process of the spiritual being – is quite effortless. In some peoples’ lives, challenges come thick and fast while in case of others, it is an event-less life!

Tension is built in to all the activities of life – to effect transformation for good or bad. I would rather say, it is more important how you react to the events occurred than the events itself as they form your decisions.

No effort is wasted! No one fails and every one contributes to the experience that follows a challenge.

A challenge may just be a ‘tool’ to break up the blockages in a person thereby experiencing transformation in his or her life. I cannot generalize all the situations – because the same situation could be rewarding to someone while it may bring a state of misery to the other. Physical trouble is painful and there can be no escape from that situation and I surely call them bad things; but, let me assure you that one’s state of mind can be governed by a learned individual and thereby he can decide whether to be happy or not.

We may never know all the reasons why bad events happen to good people. All that is required is a positive frame of mind, a winning attitude, undying self-confidence along with sheer hard work – so that every bad event is construed to be ‘mere’ props in leading a happy life!!
