China is a country that makes inroads and not let anyone know about it!
China’s growing economic and military power is of real concern to its neighbours, particularly India, when we look at the facts. With its defence spending having grown almost twice as fast as its GDP; China staking a claim to India’s Arunachal Pradesh and shoring up its armed forces in the PoK (Pakistan part of Kashmir) – is a regional threat to India! China’s belligerence cannot be overlooked, keeping in mind our past experience with China. We lost Tibet in the 1962 Sino-Indian war; and have also allowed Chinese incursion into the Kashmir Valley eventually losing a portion of it to them.
China is mounting direct military intimidation, as underlined by its large scale ‘continuing’ cross-border incursions into India. It is difficult to segregate and analyse causes of all the proxy wars (read terrorist attacks) against India, that are originating from Pakistan! We know, China has a strategic nexus with Pakistan. The State of Arunachal Pradesh is three times bigger than Taiwan and the Chinese forces are interested in seizing the ‘Tawang’ area in the state, that it claims was historically a part of Tibet. India does not have strategic alliance with any superpower to defend its territories. It has to depend on its own military capabilities!
China knows, to be a regional military power; it has to contest with India, more than anyone else. China has made deep inroads into the strategic backyard of India – from Sri Lanka to Bangladesh, and Nepal to Burma. Even in the pre-1962 period, India had made the same mistake by playing down the China’s aggressive moves along the borders.
In addition to its military strength; in the last financial quarter, Chinese economy turned out to be the second largest in the world! China’s trajectory will depend on : how its neighbors and distant superpower like the US manage it’s growing power in the region.
