“Caffè espresso, expresso or just espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely ground coffee. Compared to other coffee brewing methods, espresso often has a thicker consistency, a higher concentration of dissolved solids, and crema (foam). As a result of the pressurized brewing process, all of the flavours and chemicals in a typical cup of coffee are very concentrated. For this reason, espresso is the base for other drinks, such as lattes, cappuccino, macchiato, mochas, and americanos”. (Source Wikipedia)
I am a Coffe (Espresso) drinker and I have tasted, drank, enjoyed many a kind!
Add hot water to a shot of espresso to create an Americano. It is watered down espresso, claimed to have been given its name when American soldiers added water to their espresso. A variation is called a long black.
Cappuccino (my favorite)
A cappuccino is made of thirds and is layered beginning with the espresso on the bottom. An equal amount of steamed milk is added to the espresso and the last layer is an equal amount of foam that is the result of steaming the milk properly. Very fine bubbles make up good foam and before some of the modern machines that make consistently fine foam, it was part of the art form acquired by an experienced barista. Cappuccino can be ordered “wet”–more milk–or “dry”–less milk.
This drink is a sweetened shot of espresso, with a catch. Instead of adding the sugar after the shot is pulled–the term for brew–add the sugar to the coffee grounds beforehand.
Caffe Breve and Bombon
A caffe breve is made the same way as a caffe latte, the difference is that the breve is made with half and half instead of milk, resulting in a much creamier beverage. Another indulgent drink is called a bombon, and is a shot of espresso mixed with sweetened condensed milk.
