Deepak Chopra, spiritual teacher cum body-mind ‘medicine’ expert, writes “The secret of transcendence – There is no goal. The present moment is the home for self-realization! The present moment is not heading anywhere; it has no goal or end point. The now is eternal; it is only time that renews itself endlessly. In the ‘now’, we experience two things only: the rush of events, both physical and mental; the consciousness, the silent observer, acts like a screen upon which experience is registered. For most they both are jumbled together. Caught in the rush of experience, they have lost the silent observer and so cannot walk through the door that opens to the transcendent.”
Quite often, relentless efforts in case of many a spiritual seekers, are locked at the physical or at the most, the mental plane. And they feel that transcendence is only a hypothesis that cannot be witnessed. We fail to understand that Body, Mind and Intellect – though enable us to reach the higher plane of our consciousness, they do not become an end by themselves in our spiritual endeavor due to their inherent limitations. Intellect fails totally despite its superior stance amongst all the tools, because transcendence happens on its own. It is a thoughtless state where there is communion with the whole, though it may be only for a transient moment. But, in that transient moment, the realization takes place and one is merged with the whole to get into an enlightened living.
Swami Chinmayananda uses BMI (Body,Mind Intellect) principle and explains how the progress of spiritual experience as such becomes subtler at every stage, one after another. There is nothing outside and the seeker has to look inside to make progress. Perception, Feelings and thinking lead us to object, emotions and thoughts respectively. But, Universal consciousness is above all of this, orchestrating the complete. Perception is itself prone to errors! Emotions and thoughts are self-made as a result of feelings or thinking that are driven at individual level. So, why do we conclude that these tools have to necessarily lead us to the ultimate. Truly, it does not always happen for each and every seeker, despite his or her efforts.
Transcendence is a state – where the Universal Reality is experienced by the seeker and he or she surrenders to it. It is a helpless state for those who cannot take advantage of the Oneness experienced, in their thoughts leading to noble actions. But, a true seeker is enlightened by such a ‘cosmos’ experience and his lifestyle and behavior change for ever. He is referred to as the one who has transcended all his shortcomings – to become an enlightened being. He becomes part of the observer – the universal consciousness! Why do we run to temples, churches, mosques to experience that which is within us? Look inside and you shall find it some day!! No Knowledge comes from outside; it is all inside.
Concept of transcendence is experiencing our true state that is not camouflaged by the physical body, a restless mind, or an erroneous intellect. What may seem to be truth need not really be! It is like getting ‘nude’ after shedding whatever you have or whatever you thought was yours. It is a concept that is not acknowledged by many. They cannot do believe in it unless they believe in themselves first!
