Let us believe in India ! Let us build India !!

During the beginning years of my career in sales & marketing (1989-91), I spent lot of time traveling into most of the 29 urban/semi-urban and rural districts of Maharashtra State and entire Goa state as part of my first sales assignment in a Indian franchising company setting up education and business/communication centers. Despite having returned from the United States very recently, I enjoyed these sales trips because there is a natural bonding between me and my country. Later, I traveled to and lived in Middle East countries and South Africa, again in course of my job. Surprising to many NRI friends of mine, I did not chose to settle abroad as most did during that time. Of course, nowadays going abroad has become part of most jobs the youngsters take up. Well, India has no longer remained the same after financial reforms were imposed in the year 1991-92. It has become a regional business power center and countries in the Middle East, South East Asia look up to India for boosting their trade, availing education, and for diplomatic support among other things.

India – is bound to grow further in the coming decade. And most expect her to be an Economic Superpower in the world by the year 2020. What do we lack? Patriotism? A better and enabling government? Political stability? Nothing at All ! I can see around me.. there are lot of patriotic youngsters raring to go. They have realized that the developed world ( US and UK) is in deep recession and it will take these countries much longer time to get out of recession. There are more IITs and IIMs opened in India to meet the growing requirements of the youth. We have a population of nearly 700 million below the age of 30 years in India ! More and new fields of education are being recognized in India. Coalition governments has become the order of the day. Regional competition will grow among Indian states to attract FDI from the beleaguered first world. Indian culture is being promoted abroad and more foreigners know about Indian eating habits and lifestyle. Take for example, Oprah Winfrey, the famed Talk show host from the US walks into India wearing a saree to promote her next show!

But, there are many challenges and unfinished tasks on the table; naming few.. provide better and affordable complete healthcare especially to the poor, quality higher education to the promising career aspirants, better regulatory framework to ensure income tax compliance in business owners’ class, more infrastructure to meet the growing needs of urbanization, better public distribution system to eradicate inventory waste, transparency in voting, state and central politics, better governance with political consensus, electoral reforms to scale down number of political parties in the system, implementing and ensuring education to the masses, child welfare and eradication of practice of child labor, eradication of endemic corruption in politics, arrest of parallel economy of black money and mainly, another round of financial reforms to encourage free enterprise.

Prior to her independence, India was a group of monarchy ruled small kingdoms and later she toiled under British colonial rule for 100 years and more. India is the oldest civilization in the world. It is a long way she has traveled and has established itself as the largest democracy – a secular, multi-cutural, multi-linguistic society satisfying diverse faiths in religion like nowhere else in the world. And it is not so easy to govern a nation like India. But the eventuality happened; India stood tall while neighbor Pakistan which got independence around same time is still struggling to be a fledgling democratic country, helpless and hosting terrorists.

India will get right there by the year 2020. A developed country. As an invited member in the UN Security council. Most of us believe she will.

I can hear the beating of drums on the streets while I write this…the public celebration is already ON. Unlike in the earlier years, most of the Indians are looking forward to the 63rd Republic Day dawning tomorrow !

Come, let us build India !! Let us believe in India !
