Every year during the festival of Holi, people flock from different parts of the country to Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded. Sri Hazur Sahib is one of the most important Sikh shrines and probably the only Holy place in the world that celebrates the festival of Holi in such a grand way. Holi is traditionally celebrated with colors and Bhang, a natural narcotic drink. However, inside the Gurudwara premises, Bhang is not permitted and the only color allowed is Gulaal – a natural and eco-friendly color.
I stayed in Nanded City during the year 1990-91 for few months – to start up a new franchised business and communication center for the Maegabyte (Mafatlal) group and the Kothari family who had bought the franchise from me.
On the day of Holi celebrations (Thursday, February 28, 1991) – Kamal Kothari, Mangal Kothari and myself along with several families and friends reached Kabra Nagar – situated on the outskirts of Nanded. The whole day was celebrated by drinking bhang once in a while, eating sweets, playing with gulaal and the ‘customary’ rolling in the mud before we headed to a bath near the agricultural farm, with the aid of irrigation water pumps. We had few bajre ki roti and Dahi along with some fresh cut onions, green mirchi, raw salt for lunch.
Just remembering that day …I was 25 years old and a bachelor then.
