Kaun Banega Crorepati (English: Who will become a Millionaire; popularly known as KBC) is a television game show in India. It is based on the UK game show : ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ?’ KBC was first aired in the year 2000 and was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, his first appearance on the Indian television. KBC initially offered the contestants a chance to win up to one crore Rupees, but doubled this in 2001 to two crore Rupees, further adjusted from the fourth season to include a jackpot of 5 crore rupees.
Star Television recruited popular Hindi Film Star Shahrukh Khan (SRK) to host the third season of the show. Shahrukh Khan was at the peak of his career and was considered an ideal replacement for Amitabh Bachchan. The grand prize remained 2 crore Rupees (approx. $430,000 USD). I do not have the exact details now, on the TRP ratings while SRK hosted the show, but it is believed they were not so high as they were when Amitabh Bachchan hosted the KBC shows.
The Seventh season (called KBC 7) will be hosted again by Amitabh Bachchan starting from today on Sony TV channel. The total prize money has been increased to INR 7 crore and an additional lifeline has been added in the game show. The 70-year-old Hindi film industry icon has so far hosted five seasons of the show, barring the third edition, which saw superstar Shahrukh Khan in the quiz-master’s seat.
