An Indian American Girl from Vijaywada (AP) gets crowned as Miss America 2014 !

(Nina Davuluri is excited and emotional, after winning the Miss America Pageant 2014 crown, on Sunday night, at Atlantic City, New Jersey)

On Sunday, September 15, 2013, the Miss America pageant has crowned its first winner from an Indian background – an aspiring doctor who plans to use the $50,000 (£31,000) prize money to fund her studies – sparking a flood of racist criticism on social media.

“I’m so happy this organisation has embraced diversity,” 24-year-old Nina Davuluri said in her first press conference, moments after winning the crown in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.” But within minutes of winning the title, Nina Davuluri, whose talent routine was a ‘Bollywood fusion’ dance, was the target of racist social media comments.

Wikipedia states .. ‘Nina Davuluri (Telugu: నీనా దావులూరి, born April 20, 1989) is an American beauty pageant title holder who was named Miss New York 2013, subsequently winning Miss America 2014. She is the first Indian American to be chosen as Miss America. Nina Davuluri was born in Syracuse, New York, but moved to Oklahoma at age four and later to St. Joseph, Michigan, where she would go on to attend college at the University of Michigan. Along with her family, she moved back to the Syracuse suburb of Fayetteville in the mid-2000s, where her father is a gynecologist affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital.’

For the first time ever, in the year 2008, a Black American, Barack Obama, got elected as the President of United States of America and now an Indian American is crowned as Miss America 2014 ! Way to GO !
