Leander Paes – remarkably wins the U.S Open Doubles Title !

I started playing the game of Lawn Tennis at the Indian club, Salalah, Sultanate of Oman (1994-95) and so I know the game reasonably well to figure out .. how difficult it is to play the game, especially after one crosses the age of 40 years. But, Leander Paes seems to be an ageless warrior in this great sport. Well, there could be many ways to describe Leander Paes – ‘a man who gives everything he has with him to the game when he is on the court, or a man who is probably India’s best ambassador of tennis as a game/ sport, or a man with a never-say- die-attitude and a fighter spirit to the finish.

‘Leander Paes became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title on Sunday when he and Radek Stepanek took the US Open doubles title, but their journey to the championship was almost scarred by tragedy. India’s Paes, 40, and 34-year-old Czech Stepanek, the fourth seeds, defeated Alexander Peya of Austria and Brazil’s Bruno Soares, the second seeds, 6-1, 6-3.’ ( Excerpt from: ‘Leander Paes, oldest man to win a Grand Slam, defies odds to US Open triumph’ – NDTV Sports article dt Sept 09, 2013)

Wikipedia records .. Leander Adrian Paes (born 17 June 1973) is an Indian professional tennis player who currently features in the doubles events in the ATP Tour and the Davis Cup tournament. Having won eight doubles and six mixed doubles Grand Slam titles and finishing as runner up in numerous other Grand Slam finals, he is considered to be one of the greatest and most respected contemporary doubles and mixed doubles players in the world. He is the oldest man to have won a grand slam. He is among the most successful professional Indian tennis players and is also the former captain of the Indian Davis Cup team. He is the recipient of India’s highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, in 1996–1997; the Arjuna Award in 1990; and the Padma Shri award in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to tennis in India. Paes completed the career grand slam in men’s doubles after winning the Australian Open in 2012. He is the sports ambassador of the Indian state of Haryana.
