The film ‘ Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic love story ‘Romeo and Juliet’, but this version is set in Gujarat, India. The film was initially titled Ram-Leela but was changed to Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela in response to an order by the Delhi High Court.
The film opens with a weird gun battle between some trigger happy people and that’s what sets the ball rolling. Fire arms are easily available in this village where Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone) live. They belong to two different clans ( as it is always .. in most Hindi ‘formula’ movies), ‘Rajadi’ and ‘Sanada’ .. that have lived together but are at war and have been at war for the past 500 years.
The film has a lot of moments that stay with you, Ram and Leela’s passionate attraction that draws them to each other is very well done and that’s what makes the kissing scenes just a part of the big picture. In the song ‘Nagada Dhol Baaje’… it’s tough to move your eyes away from Deepika Padukone who dances enchantingly, with the right facial expressions. The song reminds me of ‘Hum Dil Dhe Chuke Hain Sanam’ famed number and tune .. ‘Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje’ !
Ram Leela is a typical ‘Sanjay Leela Bhansali film’ that is based on melodrama, haunting lyrics, melodious music and picturesque locales. The movie has collected Rs 53 crores nett at the Box Office in the very first weekend, after its release and is fast heading to join the Rs 100 crore club !
Go watch it .. for entertainment and music !!
