The year will definitely end with a ‘dhoom’ for the Yash Raj Films, as its latest offering ‘Dhoom 3’ broke the record for the highest opening day collections (domestic). Raking in a total of Rs 36.22 crore, the Aamir Khan starrer has surpassed Shah Rukh Khan’s Eid blockbuster ‘Chennai Express’ which collected Rs 33.12 on its opening day. According to details provided by YRF, the Hindi version of the movie collected Rs 33.42 crore while the dubbed versions (in Tamil and Telegu) collected another Rs 2.8 crore. The film was released in a total of 4600 screens with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telegu in 150 and 450 screens respectively.
Suniel Wadhwa, independent distributor and trade analyst says, “Dhoom 3 (Hindi) set opening day records in some circuits while in others it was below either ‘Chennai Express’ or ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. It has to be noted these films were released on Eid and Independence Day respectively, while Dhoom 3 has been released on a non-holiday day. Wadhwa also points out that Aamir films released around Christmas have had a good run at the box office and this has been one of the reasons that the film industry is very positive about the movie.
“Perfectionist Aamir Khan is proving to be a Santa Clauas at the box office, even before celebration begins for Christmas Day. As ‘Dhoom 3’ is all set to create history much like his earlier films – ‘Ghajani’ (December 24, 2008) which garnered 114 cr followed by that ‘3 Idiots’ (December 23, 2010) which went on to become the first film to cross 202 cr.”
He further adds that ‘Dhoom 3’ has potential to cross 250 cr, looking at the opening it has received.
